Axis Portable Air. Building the national leader in portable climate control.

Axis Portable Air provides portable climate control solutions to commercial and industrial customers across the country, including retailers, pharmacies, hospitals, and offices, helping them keep operations running during HVAC outages, renovations, and seasonal demand spikes.

  1. 01. Thesis

Tailwind’s research into HVAC pointed to portable climate solutions as a less contested way into the sector, with room for a national leader to emerge in a fast-growing market.

  2. 02. Sourcing

The founder was looking for a partner with real, hands-on experience in specialty rental and HVAC climate solutions to help scale the business. That need shaped how the partnership came together and set the stage for the growth that followed.

  3. 03. Conviction

Deep experience in specialty rental gave Tailwind conviction in the business model and its ability to scale. That conviction was reinforced by a genuine ownership culture at Axis, where every team member holds a stake in the business.

  4. 04. Value Creation

Since partnering with Tailwind, Axis has:

    • Grown its branch network from 5 to 45 locations nationwide, accelerating greenfield openings across new markets
    • Grown its team from roughly 50 to 500 employees
    • Implemented a next-generation operating system to improve efficiency and strengthen its competitive position as it scaled

The investment accelerated management’s growth objectives and helped establish Axis as the leading independent provider of temporary climate solutions in the country.

    • Recent greenfield expansion

added 40 locations to Axis's footprint

    • Largest independent provider

      of portable climate solutions

    • Employee ownership model

      offered to all employees

  5. 05. Realization

Continuing the partnership with Tailwind remained a priority for the founder and management team throughout. The two sides ultimately structured a transaction that provided liquidity while allowing the business to keep building on the platform it had created.
